Getting Ready…

Well, I spent yesterday shopping for supplies…  Sunblock, a water pack, folding toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, a small foam pad for sleeping outdoors, a hat with mosquito netting, first aid stuff, and a compass.  The original Peace Pilgrim was way tougher than I am–all she brought was a toothbrush and her mail.  And she was in her 70s!

Today I painted up a blue shirt to wear on the walk…  It reads “1,000 Miles on Foot for Peace on the back” (the same thing the original Peace Pilgrim had on hers, minus 24,000 miles).  The front reads “Walking for Peace.”

Tomorrow I’ll go hunting for clippers to shave my head…  I figure a shaved head will be much easier to care for on a long trip, and will make me less vulnerable to random attack as a young woman, since my gender won’t be as obvious from behind.  The hardest preliminary step in this will definitely be shaving my head.  I want my hair!  Oh well.  I want peace more.  And I’m pretty sure kids who have lost their hair to cancer need my hair more than I do.

Walking for Peace

Starting June 1st, I’ll be walking at least 1,000 miles for peace. I will walk until given shelter and fast until given food. The way I understand the word, “peace” means internal peace, interpersonal peace, and peace on a national and international level. To get a little more specific, it also means that a young woman should be able to take a walk alone without fearing for her safety. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case right now. I’d like to help improve that situation.
